The Nederlandse Opera presents this opera by Puccini with a new ending by
Luciano Berio in Het Muziektheater, but especially for the Holland Festival
the show will be screened in the open air. Oosterpark will become a huge
open-air theatre where talking is allowed during the performance and a
picnic basket is welcome. Live opera relays in the Oosterpark during the
Holland Festival have by now become something of a tradition and they have
been wonderfully friendly and informal events. And despite the open-air
atmosphere the music and drama can be followed perfectly well. Consider it
as a musical picnic too, so please bring food and wine! Give me a ring or
write me an e-mail so that I can look out for you. We shall go and get some
good seats on the stand in front of the screen one hour before the start, so
please be on time.
Story:
The pretty Chinese princess Turandot only wants to give her hand to a prince
who can solve three riddles. Those who fail will be beheaded. After many
executions, Calaf, the son of the dethroned king of the Tartars manages to
win her hand. But she doesn't want him. Calaf now gives Turandot a riddle:
if she can find out his name before morning breaks, she is free and he is
willing to die.
