Curriculum Vitae:
Bas Smeulders
Born 16 december 1959 in Goirle, The Netherlands.
Studied Chemistry at the University of Nijmegen (solid-state chemistry and molecular spectroscopy) with a traineeship at the University of Edinburgh (electrochemistry). Graduated in February 1987.
Completed his PhD at the University of Twente at the
Rheology group
on a subject on the linear viscoelastic behaviour of concentrated dispersions of vesicles, leading to the determination of the mechanical properties of the lipid bilayers. Thesis defence: 14 February 1992.
Began a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Cambridge (
Department of Chemical Engineering , Polymer Fluids group ). There he studied the non-linear viscoelastic flow of complex fluids, developed a new type of high-pressure oscillatory rheometer and a shear cell for optical studies on fluid flow. He also worked at the Cavendish Laboratory (Dept. of Physics, Polymer and Colloids Group ), and carried out research into MRI flow visualisation at Massey University , New Zealand.
Since 1995 he works as a Research Scientist for Quaker Chemical , Steel/Fluid Power Research, where he is involved in research on the subjects of corrosion, fire retardance and lubrication.
